Manai Instituteは、中高生を対象とした体験イベント  Manai Experience Weekend を実施します。

日毎に異なるワークショップをご用意し、サイエンスを学ぶだけでなく、Manaiにおいて自身の研究を行うイメージも持っていただける様なイベントになっています。 Manai Instituteへのご応募を検討されている方は、この機会にぜひご参加ください。

  • March 27th     Viruses: The Beauty of the Beasts    Lecturer: Pavel Prosselkov   

It is hard to find anyone who would not be familiar with the word “viruses” our days. The list of diseases this word associated with is pretty long: HIV, herpes, hepatitis, Ebola, influenza, COVID-19 etc., to mention only a few. And it is even harder to find a person who would appreciate and acknowledge the diversity and intricate complexity of these God’s creatures, their life cycles and amazing abilities as perfect killer machines. Nature is neither good or bad, everything is for a reason, we just need to find it, leaving behind our selfish inclination to see this world through the lens of our own endless benefit and insatiety. Viruses are mobile genetic elements, unable to reproduce on its own and depending on their hosts, who is eventually got killed by them, deserving to be named parasites. As gatekeepers between the living and non-living (~machine) worlds they should be studied and understood, to keep their behavior under control and harmony with their hosts. To prevent the outbreak of the viruses-borne diseases is the primary goal of Virology, a fascinating field of Microbiology studying the beauty of these beasts.

  • March 28th    Programming: Face Recognition    Lecturer: Cristina Valle

Face recognition algorithms are used in a wide range of applications: from security checks to screen locks, from digital makeup to dating apps. But how do they work? What is their accuracy? And do they have any limitations? After studying the theory of face recognition and the basics of neural networks, we are going to build our own face recognition program and test it. It will be interesting to challenge the algorithm with makeup, glasses or hats and see what additional information the computer can “learn” from our faces.

  • March 29th    Proteins and Protein Folding   Lecturer: Fred Junghans

Proteins are the basis of life. In spite of that, besides how much of them we should eat everyday and that they are good for people doing sports, the average person does not know much about them. However the world of proteins is vast and full of marvelous little bio machines that have been perfected over millions of years. This workshop will introduce many examples of fascinating proteins and how they work and additionally will take a deeper look in how form follows function on a molecular level.
